Gather All Required Documents
Before submitting your claim, make sure you have all the necessary documents. Learn how to file here. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Nexus Letter: Ensure it’s signed by a qualified medical professional.
- Medical Records: Documentation of your medical condition.
- Service Treatment Records: Records from your time in service.
- Current Medical Diagnosis: Proof of your current medical condition.
- Supporting Evidence: Any additional documents that support your claim.
Organize these documents carefully to ensure nothing is missing. If you need help, you can find and work with an accredited VSO.

VA Form 21-526EZ
Veterans file disability compensation claims on VA Form 21-526EZ, which asks for personal details, the conditions being claimed, and any supporting documents. We cannot prepare or file VA forms. An accredited VSO will do that with you at no cost, and our letters are written to be easy to file with.

Submit Your Claim
The VA accepts a claim in one of three ways:
Online Submission:
- Visit the VA Filing For Disability Portal
- The portal walks through uploading documents.
Mail Submission:
- A completed form and documents go to the appropriate VA regional office. Find the address here.
In-Person Submission:
- Documents can also be handed in at the nearest VA regional office.
Which route to use, and when to file, is a decision for the veteran and their VSO or accredited representative.
